Automation Project Engineer

SimoTech requires an Automation Project Engineer to join our internal project team. Supporting a number of projects including greenfield Biotechnology expansion project. The ideal candidate will have 3+ years’ experience working on projects in the Life Sciences industry and a strong understanding of PLC/SCADA systems and VPE packages.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review Vendor Packaged Equipment Proposals in order to:
  • Ensure they comply with the master specs, reference architecture and user requirements.

  • Participate in Technical Bid Evaluation.

  • Identify any gaps in compliance with the site specifications and user requirements.

  • Negotiate with the Vendor to try to mitigate those gaps.

  • Estimate the effort (cost and schedule) to perform any remediation to bridge the gaps between vendors proposal and client expectations.
  • Participate in the review & approval of vendor documentation, including but not limited to:
  • Network diagrams and system architecture

  • Functional Design Specifications

  • Software Design Specifications

  • Interface Specifications

  • Design, install and configure centralised software infrastructure such as Backup & Restore / Version Control Software, Domain Authentication Software, OPC Interface Nodes, Thin Client Management Software etc.
  • Design, install and configure extract, transform and load packages (ETL packages) to centralise alarms & events, audit trails and reports.
  • Interface with the DeltaV team to design how the Vendor Packages are integrated into the site-wide control system.
  • Interface with the MES team to design how the Vendor Packages are integrated into the site-wide MES.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science or the Life Sciences.
  • 3+ years’ experience working in the Life Sciences industry.
  • Proven experience working with PLC/SCADA systems.
  • Previous VPE Management experience on a pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical batch automation project.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills required.
  • Ability to work well with diverse, multi-disciplined groups.
